12. Operating the device

Operation using the app

On the main screen’s Control tab, you can do the following:

  1. Adjust the sensitivity (1: Low; 2: Medium; 3: High)
  2. Periodic transmission on/off: Periodically obtain location information even when no movement is detected.
  3. Notification on/off: Turn smartphone notifications on or off.
  4. Location: Display a map showing your location.
  5. Device Settings: Configure advanced settings for the device.
  6. Lock mode change panel

Note 1: The device can only be operated while connected via Bluetooth.
Note 2: The alarm activation time and frequency limits, regular transmission interval, and other settings can be set in Device Settings.
Note 3: Regular transmission tends to drain the battery, so we recommend that you do not use it all the time.

Operation using the device

If the AlterLock device and the smartphone are within a few meters of each other while connected by Bluetooth, briefly pressing the button on the device turns Lock mode on or off.

From the advanced settings, the "Adjust" button allows you to re-set the sensitivity of the switch.

The button on the device can be used if Bluetooth reconnection with the smartphone is automatic. This means it can be used with the iPhone and most Android models unless the smartphone’s settings and power saving features prevent reconnection.

Reboot the device

If the device does not reconnect with the smartphone or is not working properly, you can restart it by pressing and holding the switch for more than 10 seconds.
There is no security issue as the lock status and settings will be maintained after a reboot.

13. Device operation check

After registering the AlterLock device, make sure the movement detection alarm and notification features are working.

  1. With the device nearby, go to the main screen and tap Unlock.
  2. The lock status display changes to Lock and movement detection is enabled.
  3. When the device detects movement, an alarm sounds.
  4. The initial alarm is set to a relatively quiet warning sound. Be aware that if the device senses movement again after a few seconds, the alarm sounds at maximum volume.
Note: To set the initial alarm to maximum volume or to change how long the alarm sounds for, go to Device Settings.

  5. Confirm that you want to receive notifications on your smartphone.
  6. The alarm stops if you tap Misdetection or the alarm times out since a notification is displayed on the main screen.

Note 1: After Lock mode is turned on, the initial alarm won’t acquire location information for quicker notification.
Note 2: It may take up to two minutes depending on the reception status of GPS satellites.
Note 3: By default, the alarm won’t sound even if a fourth and subsequent movements are detected while the device is in Lock mode. By default, the alarm won’t sound even after a fourth and subsequent movements are detected while the device is in Lock mode, because we think it’s better to track the location only rather than continuously sounding the alarm. You can change this setting in Device Settings.

14. Advanced Device Settings

You’ll find more information about the advanced settings of the AlterLock device here.

15.Estimated battery life

The approximate operating time of the device in each state from full charge is as follows

ConditionOperating hours
Unlock45 days
Lock35 days
Unlock + Periodic transmission (60 minutes)7-15 days
Lock + Periodic transmission (60 minutes)6-14 days
Unlock + Periodic transmission (180 minutes)16-28 days
Lock + Periodic transmission (180 minutes)15-25 days

*The above figures show the operating time during Bluetooth connection. If the Bluetooth connection time is short, the uptime will be slightly longer than this.

*The battery is designed to operate over a wide temperature range, but conditions below 0°C or above 45°C may reduce battery life or cause damage.

*It consumes a lot of power when it is locating or sounding an alarm. The time taken to locate the device depends on the environment and therefore the operating time may vary significantly.

Tips to make your battery last longer

Do not store in extremely hot or cold environments.

Routine storage in direct sunlight, in a car during the summer months, prolonged storage in freezing cold conditions or repeated charging may damage the battery and reduce its operating time.

Periodic transmissions should only be used when necessary

We recommend that you only turn it on when you need to ride, as periodic transmissions of location data and data transmissions consume battery power.

Deactivate the device if it will not be used for a long time

If you are not going to use the device for a long period of time, charge the battery for about an hour before storing it with the device deactivated. Storage with an empty battery may reduce the operating time.
